I had mentioned in an earlier post about how sketching has shifted from a solo activity to much more of a mother-daughter activity. A popular way to pass odd moments of time is "dibujando con dedos," drawing with fingers on the nearest touch-screen gadget. I so enjoy watching these explorations take place that I have started doing screen captures as the process unfolds. Which means, gif time!<br />

Parenting a toddler is a life stage that is not to be trifled with. Which is to say that rather than sketching on this amazing sunny weekend during which spring was indeed starting to spring, I found myself...<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Introducing the kiddo to the concept of catkins, and showing how the pollen poofs out when you shake them,</li>
<li>Clarifying that crocuses come in a whole range of colors, from yellow to white to purple, and</li>
<li>Inventing fancy new common names for certain wild fungi (in Spanish, no less) to clarify that even though they are stunningly pretty, they aren't meant for human consumption. Thus, "witches jelly" is now "mermelada de babosa" (marmelade for the slugs) in my book.</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY91TkpR4w0vy_5ZSHPKjsydTu7M2JtKTzq308_SpTolZgKzEMxp_8xjfB9z5egKE0S9ZFrshIG-ySH7V39IW7gJE1w87RSAf4uTuFxJ1IWLXSawQGDICGNbxUW1CqM6ZH5OX5cFGCqy8s/s1600/2016-02-07_23.42.37.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY91TkpR4w0vy_5ZSHPKjsydTu7M2JtKTzq308_SpTolZgKzEMxp_8xjfB9z5egKE0S9ZFrshIG-ySH7V39IW7gJE1w87RSAf4uTuFxJ1IWLXSawQGDICGNbxUW1CqM6ZH5OX5cFGCqy8s/s320/2016-02-07_23.42.37.jpg" width="312" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And in turn, the kiddo did some marvellous drawing on the lids of cardboard boxes. Not only do I applaud the control she had to make all those broad parallel strokes, but she also </div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Clearly articulated the differences between "light" and "dark" versions of colors (claro/oscuro) for the first time I've heard, and</li>
<li>Narrated a very specific strategy for which colors she wanted to use first and then which would come next, in a very deliberate way.</li>
</ul>
<div>
Dang. Landmark city in my brain, at least.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Plus, she declared "I love the catkins," which is the first time we've ever heard her say "I love (x)" about <b><i>anything.</i></b></div>
<div>
<b><i><br /></i></b></div>
<div>
Am not sure if I am realistically going to keep updating this blog much in the near future, so this post can be a nod to the dynamic force of life stages in the meantime.</div>

I am sometimes nervous to see my work in print, how will it turn out in the final form? But this book is quite simply gorgeous.<br />

Snapshot of my first draft of the cover art above with finished books alongside. The color and paper choice of the cover are so satisfyingly lovely. (It's the little things, like how it feels in our hands, that can really make a book special, you know?) And the graphic design inside is super great too: lush, sophisticated, yet very reader-friendly layout and color pallette. Bravo.<br />

A favorite attraction at the Oregon Zoo is now the wig-wag train crossing signal that's across from the leopards. Sorry leopards, but you don't go "ding ding ding" or have a red light in your belly, do you?</div>

A slightly clumsy attempt to capture the dynamic wiggler bouncing around in the cafe chair while eating her muffin. The proportions are all cattywampus, but the general concept of seat as jungle-gym is coming across at least. </div>

I work as an exhibit developer at <b><a href="http://www.omsi.edu/" target="_blank">my local science museum</a></b>. Folks often ask what the difference is between an exhibit <i>developer</i> and an exhibit <i>designer.</i> Short answer: I read all the scientific papers and figure out how to make the juicy data fun for 8 year olds. And then I coordinate with the exhibit designers, who do everything from color schemes and fonts to figuring out how to make structures that won't fall over when countless 4-year-olds throw themselves headlong at them.<br />
<br />

It's mostly a writing and thinking job, but I do get to scribble in the margins to help me communicate my ideas. And I will admit that I've gotten very fond of creating fast scribbles of microbes in fat felt-tip markers. Kind of a zen circle sort of thing.<br />

This little series used a set of 3 double-sided ballpoint pens, total of 6 color options, in a super-slim little pocket notebook. Not terribly elegant, but it's enough to keep me having fun!<br />

Years ago, I did a <b><a href="http://huntingtonconservatory.org/" target="_blank">project</a></b> that was a mix of exhibit development and science illustration work for <b><a href="http://huntington.org/" target="_blank">the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens</a></b>. I'm always delighted when their team gets in touch with me again for new adventures in art.<br />

The idea was to make it a sort of filagree pattern, that would be applied to the windows as a giant vinyl decal. I drew the images in Photoshop first, then converted the final draft to vector images that could be scaled up to fit the windows.<br />

I decided to challenge myself to an art experiment this weekend: capturing the beautiful pink cherry blossoms in the neighbor's yard using a unusual art tool...being the 16-month-old kiddo.<br />
<br />
<b>Step one:</b> Admire the awesome flowers. (Wow, huh?) <br />

<b>Step two:</b> Assemble non-toxic art supplies in the appropriate color scheme (in this case, a gray washable non-toxic marker, a custom mix of red and white tempera paint, a nice soft paintbrush, and a stack of cream-colored cards.) <br />
<br />
<b>Step three:</b> Strategically hand art supplies to kiddo during a gap in the incessant going-down-the-slide practice and cross fingers...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b>Step four:</b> Burst buttons with pride at how nicely that all turned out. Brag on internet, mail originals to grandparents. <br /><br />
Yeah, OK, it's not really that much different than the folks who <a href="http://www.maggotart.com/art.htm" target="_blank">dip grubs in paint</a> and them them crawl all over the paper...But it's a fun exercise in selecting materials and introducing chaos! (Plus, it's so exciting to watch this grub learn how to re-load a brush with paint.)<br />
<br />
Happy spring, y'all.<br />

<br />
However, the niches are close enough that I was able to make use of a modern bobcat femur to inform my work...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidDUbzg5LJ_0dh5SF6VwBcG1fsVMbE0JUguWGk9iBoF6NHgKDgIYSCrbKo2hfGY1iGYnOFd9FVfHY-juVnjnmeCkvgdF9T3pclB0UYUmh_5ep_iEX3r-kCSPOxvFegPrqJSgt3ehwOIg02/s1600/Ant-photo3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidDUbzg5LJ_0dh5SF6VwBcG1fsVMbE0JUguWGk9iBoF6NHgKDgIYSCrbKo2hfGY1iGYnOFd9FVfHY-juVnjnmeCkvgdF9T3pclB0UYUmh_5ep_iEX3r-kCSPOxvFegPrqJSgt3ehwOIg02/s1600/Ant-photo3.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I was adapting the line drawings that the scientist had made from the original fossil, and creating a shaded version that leaned on the bobcat bone for its structural integrity.<br />

<br />
Tonight I'm going to see if I can whack out a stippled <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalicothere" target="_blank">chalicothere</a> molar. Ha! Stippling is a notoriously slow way of doing illustrations, since it literally goes One. Dot. At. A. Time. But the results can be nice when you put in the time, and it does have a "timeless" look that comes across nicely in publications. Wish me luck!<br />

I bet folks might get annoyed if I only ever post <i>that</i> stuff..."<br />
<br />
And then I did a double-take and decided that I should be proudly embracing this life stage both in person and on the blog. So here you go, internet: some almost-recent doodles of this growing changing toddler. Enjoy!<br />

<br />
<br />
We agreed that it would be inspired by the awesome tricks that bike dance groups like the <a href="http://sprockettes.org/" target="_blank"><b>Sprockette</b></a>s and the <a href="http://derailleurs.wordpress.com/" target="_blank"><b>Derailleurs</b></a> perform.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKKNZ3MJDn6WCnXLPZgatrIBpY_mnojwL8T7A-oVkIiewu_mNZVLU_r2X99JTx2hBCX4wbdvXofrIlwqESWgtJ9XYJpYl8czCOip8iMjFVYgdcIKcO9hdDTB1qez9tB9B6-H7w4MoKgTPV/s1600/poses.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKKNZ3MJDn6WCnXLPZgatrIBpY_mnojwL8T7A-oVkIiewu_mNZVLU_r2X99JTx2hBCX4wbdvXofrIlwqESWgtJ9XYJpYl8czCOip8iMjFVYgdcIKcO9hdDTB1qez9tB9B6-H7w4MoKgTPV/s1600/poses.jpg" height="232" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Having a team of people engaged in the same pose was a great opportunity to allude to diversity of experiences in the book.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYEB5PF5lB8fOBqur7gok4fRC-McKEaCgB1Z0xIc9Zeq1Borgk8MpvZZHCNH3GZqR2LUu9bwz-bcVpbDl_y5-aGwNGLssZY718snTq_pHk9IbUREy8ENpE3Hcl5lM6CzhqNbCAsLkGrTR1/s1600/Balanced-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYEB5PF5lB8fOBqur7gok4fRC-McKEaCgB1Z0xIc9Zeq1Borgk8MpvZZHCNH3GZqR2LUu9bwz-bcVpbDl_y5-aGwNGLssZY718snTq_pHk9IbUREy8ENpE3Hcl5lM6CzhqNbCAsLkGrTR1/s1600/Balanced-3.jpg" height="320" width="162" /></a></div>
Not to mention the themes of interdependence and the importance of supporting each other.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKpYpv6mN78_7GUssTJHZVnivL-z9TmASme_MrK67XyE-GQUOx9YLHbhUIPeiNqkiSImH4Qi1MS9Zbq1RbL8d7Y2jmbw2vAy9RrauVSWeTtkDRzrJ9GTRnzQ7Z3AAJcWDrtgRJVT9TmSU9/s1600/Balanced-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKpYpv6mN78_7GUssTJHZVnivL-z9TmASme_MrK67XyE-GQUOx9YLHbhUIPeiNqkiSImH4Qi1MS9Zbq1RbL8d7Y2jmbw2vAy9RrauVSWeTtkDRzrJ9GTRnzQ7Z3AAJcWDrtgRJVT9TmSU9/s1600/Balanced-4.jpg" height="320" width="174" /></a></div>
Progress! But wait, is this looking to static? Too well-balanced? Do we need more dramatic tension?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWRfNq_-_HIZCExAIJCXpnUgtW4JsOIOf37qZG6_KMGHsISqiePUUssa86wLMx2zxQSbgJly7p2ww15utidoFxA8Y5cq0XPLWGkR8TpdDEttFfN9Gx_hmrYTFTmRfLMaPiNpAV1PmFJoMo/s1600/Balanced-5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWRfNq_-_HIZCExAIJCXpnUgtW4JsOIOf37qZG6_KMGHsISqiePUUssa86wLMx2zxQSbgJly7p2ww15utidoFxA8Y5cq0XPLWGkR8TpdDEttFfN9Gx_hmrYTFTmRfLMaPiNpAV1PmFJoMo/s1600/Balanced-5.jpg" height="320" width="152" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I suggested a twist of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nude_Descending_a_Staircase,_No._2" target="_blank"><b>Nude Descending a Staircase</b></a>. Elly suggested a dose of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laoco%C3%B6n" target="_blank"><b>Laocoön</b></a>. Oh hey, says I, there's this neat French statue of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fran%C3%A7ois_Joseph_Bosio#mediaviewer/File:Hercule_Bosio_Louvre_LL325-1.jpg" target="_blank"><b>Hercules wrestling a giant snake</b></a> at the <a href="http://www.portlandartmuseum.org/" target="_blank"><b>Portland Art Museum</b></a> right now. Field trip!<br />
<br />

Feather boa stands in for the snake, of course. Better! A future post will have the color version--stay tuned. <br /><br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last week I helped with a program for kids at the Portland Art Museum. One of the activities was to play "Detail Detective," using 35mm
slide frames to hone in on little corners of the artwork as a way to
explore and share what you're noticing. We used the "<a href="http://www.portlandartmuseum.org/twowaystreet" target="_blank">Two Way Street</a>" exhibition of street photography as the venue for this game. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMRimCIZdslofoOgmlPWX2k_HFDs1Z9Jcrb8CHonN62TAgVA2OhweghUeuBXNK9e7o3PJKE0zxFwSBIeu_m330VyyseECa7GpBu7RF1sw6LD14WQ81X8S9E2G5X1oqgm3Zip4QSP7CQtBG/s1600/w_2014-07-13_detail-detecti.jpg" height="640" width="362" /> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These were my starter-sketches for the activity: pick a slip of paper, see if you can find it in the gallery. All were sketched in advance with the baby kiddo underfoot or in my arms. She loved sitting on the floor and patting the walls of the gallery (especially where the carpeted wall surface transitioned to smooth painted wood.) But she did eventually get impatient, which is only fair. My last little box was drawn while she was straddling one hip, grabbing my nose in her tiny hand, and shaking my head back and forth, back and forth!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thank you for your patience, baby child. Once you are big enough to not just eat all the art supplies, I do hope that you love doodling as much as I do. </div>

It was a warm day and I was a little tuckered from the various planning committee duties (still am, in fact--almost typed "wet coat" instead of "west coast" above!) But as we wrapped up the second round of sketchbook sharing in the afternoon, my hands found a new pencil and I found myself whacking out a few more doodles.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVxVqqF57GSvCPcqfven82oU_ZVhR7aSlPa6_-Yw7YrGrydXx03Ldlt2Y1_JcfDi_9132SxRZqr3MyuVBO3m4yiFJdtidOH4yEf97ZN3NgnbcYl4pDoEoVbfXJhi4gUd2trh06KHPjIHsR/s1600/wcsketch-sensible-hat1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVxVqqF57GSvCPcqfven82oU_ZVhR7aSlPa6_-Yw7YrGrydXx03Ldlt2Y1_JcfDi_9132SxRZqr3MyuVBO3m4yiFJdtidOH4yEf97ZN3NgnbcYl4pDoEoVbfXJhi4gUd2trh06KHPjIHsR/s1600/wcsketch-sensible-hat1.jpg" height="320" width="233" /></a></div>
Part of the motivation was the fact that Paula's hat was nearly the same vermillion color as the pencil in my hand...<br />

Having packed everything up and loaded myself, my gear (too much gear), and the baby onto the city bus, I started to realize how tired the day's adventure had left me. When the kiddo got a bit fussy just two blocks from home, I was only too glad to take a break in a shady spot of overgrown lawn at the local schoolyard. She had a great time tugging on grass flower stalks while I leaned up against the fence, drank the last of my water, and thought, "Whew! What an adventure!"<br />

This weekend I challenged myself to experiment with doing some quick sketches in the full knowledge that I'd have to put the pencil down any moment--here's what I got onto the page.<br />
<br />

She's ambitious! She wiggles! She wants to put every darned thing right into her mouth!<br />
<br />
But I have been able to whack out a few back-of-an-envelope opportunistic sketches, usually when she drops off to sleep in my lap.<br />
<br />
Sometimes those sketches happen on the back on an incoming envelope...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggoIyHIvN_uv_d4XB6fAo13wV9UYcXhSvzjq51H4Pf-0-kCeSOPJvqY9see8MVigTWAT3H6HxDfPDPc55fyW5ueXkX8w4Bb09316gbAQ-2b2Ey9Dfld62XSDeDfjkCy_Vie7Fyf4-04uej/s1600/w_04-12-2014_env-in.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggoIyHIvN_uv_d4XB6fAo13wV9UYcXhSvzjq51H4Pf-0-kCeSOPJvqY9see8MVigTWAT3H6HxDfPDPc55fyW5ueXkX8w4Bb09316gbAQ-2b2Ey9Dfld62XSDeDfjkCy_Vie7Fyf4-04uej/s1600/w_04-12-2014_env-in.jpg" height="400" width="177" /></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
...and sometimes it's on the back of an outgoing envelope. </div>

<br />
There are some newish art installations along SE Grand Ave here in Portland which I've been enjoying every time I go by.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAB67e2P7GYwYFSiEv7LHiivkmrcpaNUL0PHlLXe32QZ8KoDo5861gyKIiuovlYAYfS1DtLPrRnatIrA6XNIZc0dPHjospwIdfAKY4XN4ze6Ryj9t9RguZycG2_UyvSSnnUGEG65QW89IM/s1600/DSCN2394.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAB67e2P7GYwYFSiEv7LHiivkmrcpaNUL0PHlLXe32QZ8KoDo5861gyKIiuovlYAYfS1DtLPrRnatIrA6XNIZc0dPHjospwIdfAKY4XN4ze6Ryj9t9RguZycG2_UyvSSnnUGEG65QW89IM/s1600/DSCN2394.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
My impressions of them are mostly that they are an interesting experiment with fractal structures, much like how the bare branches and increasingly smaller twigs of winter trees make patterns against the sky. Of course, the metal rods being arranged at right angles give them a vaguely architectural air as well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLoOSn5jkldBNkbSn67SaAf8CtM-4nJ8-R_xPWKk8M0r9XoWPkjCB_9ldAPQJEIEc4rC5pbwsRsdZox4mtcHfr7UzDhtw57wsdjIX6fvt4pg7udoudmY1sC7SqlBzxxcP4JIGoOcmVtOMc/s1600/DSCN2390.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLoOSn5jkldBNkbSn67SaAf8CtM-4nJ8-R_xPWKk8M0r9XoWPkjCB_9ldAPQJEIEc4rC5pbwsRsdZox4mtcHfr7UzDhtw57wsdjIX6fvt4pg7udoudmY1sC7SqlBzxxcP4JIGoOcmVtOMc/s1600/DSCN2390.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
But when I was headed to this weekend's sketchcrawl this weekend--on foot in the steady rain, having missed the streetcar by a mere 30 seconds--I suddenly saw these sculptures from an entirely new angle. Wait--is that the shape of a building appearing out of what I had always just seen as abstract lines in a playful tangle?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdwYX0mKMq46kDzI50k8ILbzdojYTGzfWeSsnZlXmOjztS26j7cVdUKssiOf9o0XPdrMFXkBViC4IglwjhrKfZb_iihDISW57efUrIW2kDB6oTFa7rKKnBrf91HYsv1V3I29FscIQXpNjx/s1600/DSCN2396.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdwYX0mKMq46kDzI50k8ILbzdojYTGzfWeSsnZlXmOjztS26j7cVdUKssiOf9o0XPdrMFXkBViC4IglwjhrKfZb_iihDISW57efUrIW2kDB6oTFa7rKKnBrf91HYsv1V3I29FscIQXpNjx/s1600/DSCN2396.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
And, look, it's there in the other one as well! A burst of internet research reveals that artists <a href="http://arts.gov/NEARTS/2011v1-and-comers-arts/lead-pencil-studio-and-spaces-within?id=02_leadpencil&issue=2011_v1" target="_blank">Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo</a> were specifically <a href="http://www.oregonlive.com/art/index.ssf/2012/08/two_public_art_projects_underw.html" target="_blank">invoking the "ghosts" of old industrial buildings</a> that once stood in this area of the city (an industrial district that's steadily converting to juice bars and yoga studios.) <br />
<br />
Browsing further on teh interwebs, I also found images of their installation titled "<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/usgsa/9736939692/" target="_blank">Non-Sign II</a>," which immediately brought to mind that delightful <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZuuxcm513c" target="_blank">Talking Heads song</a>:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i><span id="goog_201001088"></span>"There was a shopping mall<br />

I wish I had a lawnmower..."<span id="goog_201001089"></span></i></blockquote>
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG9loac7MFwuwDf3TdFj2xKowAKCp1Qi598tA_1EPGz0nZX_74yRS3jPCOTooypXTwUiwGWcajEo608FWF6raFzvRv7ouviXJ1ptgwWtWvqSCQ_vjlEtUYhk7C4ThDAJauIxnPYTQrro1D/s1600/w_2013-12-13_Mobywrap.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG9loac7MFwuwDf3TdFj2xKowAKCp1Qi598tA_1EPGz0nZX_74yRS3jPCOTooypXTwUiwGWcajEo608FWF6raFzvRv7ouviXJ1ptgwWtWvqSCQ_vjlEtUYhk7C4ThDAJauIxnPYTQrro1D/s320/w_2013-12-13_Mobywrap.jpg" height="222" width="320" /></a></div>
A couple of times now I've tried sketching the view of the baby, snug in the carrier an layers of winter clothes, napping against my chest.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYwh_cLv1OTRXKIz_WBko5S9x13UaWY5GzsP-ZwwfSmbx6DEnwPMnPIk6OvoR0AlLAJ2SZwLJN9clSmjPbv2QdCl6_73r6niUHbhES2JaDjJZGmEwb-7F9xRfhdz6_xo5-oRBzewFpUOjf/s1600/DSCN2207.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYwh_cLv1OTRXKIz_WBko5S9x13UaWY5GzsP-ZwwfSmbx6DEnwPMnPIk6OvoR0AlLAJ2SZwLJN9clSmjPbv2QdCl6_73r6niUHbhES2JaDjJZGmEwb-7F9xRfhdz6_xo5-oRBzewFpUOjf/s1600/DSCN2207.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
By contrast, when she's out of the carrier and wiggling around, it can be a lot harder to sketch her! I attempted this doodle with my non-dominant hand, while the baby was sporadically kicking that arm as she nursed, no less--adorable chaos.<br />

I've done a few experiments with sketching her in watercolor during these times. At first I was going about it in a more realistic way...<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="color: #666666;">(That adorable moment when she's done eating but her mouth is still gaping open for a while...)</span></i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
...but it has been much more fun to let the low light and the sleepy brain take the sketches in more abstract directions.<br />

I may not do a lot more of these at this juncture, since it squiggs me out a bit to have the paint supplies out in the same time and space as feeding time. Rule #1--<i><b>don't eat paint</b></i>. We learned that quite clearly from Van Gogh already.<br />

But this has been a lovely excuse to bust out the beautiful travel sketchbook that my aunt Lois made for me. (Parenthood is a type of voyage, isn't it?) If you're reading this, Lois, I think the choice of watercolor palette is dead-on awesome and the whole unit works like a charm!<br />
