Summer Sketching in Sellwood Park

It's such beautiful weather to get outdoors, slap paint onto scraps of paper, and heck, even nap on the lawn.

Here are a couple of the sketches I did in tempera paint on brown paper at the last Urban Sketchers gathering. You can see more in my post at pdxusk, as well.

Like Oaks for Turkeys

Mount Pisgah Arboretum is gearing up for their famous Mushroom Festival at the end of October, and they've invited me to do the festival poster and tee-shirts again this year. The theme: turkey-tail mushrooms with a flock of turkeys wandering through the habitat.

Now, turkey-tail mushrooms like to grow on stumps and dead branches of oak trees. Since I no longer live near the gorgeous oak savannah habitats at Mount Pisgah, I headed up to the Hoyt Arboretum one gray and drizzly morning to wander through their fine collection of oak trees, in seek of inspiring oak compositions. Here's what I drew.

4-T Trail Hike

Way back at the beginning of August, my friend Gretchin threw a birthday party which involved inviting all of her friends to go for a hike! The 4-T Trail uses a combination of public transportation and hiking paths to make a loop from downtown Portland up through the west hills and then back via the south waterfront. * A principios de agosto, mi amiga Gretchin organizó una excursión por el sendero 4-T. Pasamos por el centro de la ciudad hasta la cima de las colinas del oeste, usando una combinación de transporte público y senderos rústicos en el bosque. 

Most of my time was spent walking and chatting with the wonderful people at the party, but I did get in a few sketches at the main rest stops. * Pasé la mayoría de mi tiempo caminando y charlando con la gente en la fiesta, pero también dibujé en algunos lugares donde nos paramos para descansar. 

When we returned home after the hike, I thought I was headed straight for a nap. But--surprise!--there was a block party going on that had a live band in the street. We ended up hanging out with more nice people and enjoying the music to finish off the day. * Al regresar a la casa, yo intentaba descansar. Pero--¡que sorpresa!--había una fiesta en nuestro vecindario, incluso una banda tocando en vivo en la calle. Pasemos un rato charlando y escuchando la música antes de terminar el día.

Small Doodles

My little pocket notebook, which I intend to use for grocery lists and other mundane notes, sometimes catches little random sketches simply because it is on hand and convenient. Here are a few recent examples. * Tengo un cuadernito que llevo conmigo para apuntar cosas sobre los quehacers mundanos del dia. A veces, lo uso para dibujar simplemente porque lo tengo conmigo. Aqui hay algunos ejemplos recientes.

National Train Day

Normally I don't cross-post sketches that I've already put up at the Urban Sketchers of Portland blog, but I really like how the watercolors from our adventures at Union Station came out today! So I'll share them here too.

I happily discovered that I had packed a tube of "Moonglow" watercolor paint in my kit, which was a really fun addition to the shading in locomotive 700, and also made for some nice shadow tones on the brick work in the towers in my second sketch. (I unfortunately forgot to pack a tube of sunblock in my kit, so my right arm is a fascinating shade of "Pyrrol Red" now...sigh.)

Frisky Bears

Just a couple of bear sketches from a zoo visit last month. * Simplemente un par de dibujos de los osos en el zoológico, hecho el marzo pasado.

Pocket Sketchbook: Volcano, Volcano

Was up in the west hills of Portland today and caught these views of Mount Saint Helens and Mount Hood in my pocket sketchbook. * Estaba en las colinas en el oeste del Portland hoy, y capturé estas vistas de Mount Saint Helens y Mount Hood en el librito que llevo mi bolsillo.

Elephants

Elephants are kind of a thing in my family. Back in 1962, when Packy was born at the Oregon Zoo, my grandfather loaded his family into the car and drove all the way from California so they could see the baby elephant. So when my Aunt Lois was visiting Portland earlier this month, of course we had to go visit the new baby elephant, Lily. * En mi familia, tenemos un gran interés en los elefantes. En 1962, cuando Packy se nació en el Oregon Zoo, my abuelo cargó toda la familia en el auto y condució de Californa hasta Oregon para ver el elefante recién nacido. Así que, cuando mi iía Lois visitó Portland esta mez, claro que fuimos a ver el nuevo bebe en la familia de elefantes, Lily.

And in the tradition of Grandpa Chang, I of course had to sketch baby Lily and her mother Rose-Tu while I was there. * Y en la tradición de mi abuelo Chang, claro que tuve que dibujar el bebe Lily y su mama, Rose-Tu, durante la visita.

My grandmother recently send me a letter that ended with, "Hope you are well--draw more elephants!" Yes, m'am. * Mi abuela me mandó una carta recientemente que terminó con la frase, "Espero que estes bien--¡dibuja más elefantes!" Sí, señora.

Battle for the Bananas

A couple weeks ago some friends and I went to the Bat House at the Oregon Zoo. We arrived right at feeding time. The best party in the whole zoo! * Hace algunos semanas, algunos amigos y yo visitamos a la exhibición de murciélagos en el Oregon Zoo. ¡Llegamos justo al momento de darles de comer. Es la fiesta más divertida en todo el parque zoologico!

DC: Spy Museum

I visited the Spy Museum in Washington, DC this past November. The artifacts from a long history of spying were quite interesting. Tiny cameras in watches and hairbrushes and even in the buttons of a wool coat! Secret messages written on the cloth of hankies! * Visité el Spy Museum en Washington, DC el noviembre pasado. Los artefactos de una historia larga del acto de espiar eran bastante interesantes. ¡Cámaras minúsculas escondidas en relojes, en cepillas, y hasta en los botones de un abrigo! ¡Mensajes secretos escritas en la tela de un pañuelo!

Tiny guns hidden in lipstick tubes, gloves, and cigarettes! Radio transmitters hidden in fake dog poop! * ¡Pistolas pequeñas escondidas en un tubo de lápiz labial, en guantes, y en cigarillos! ¡Transmisores de radio escondidos en una imitación de caca de perro!

Spy cameras strapped to the bellies of pigeons! Cyanide capsules that you activate by chewing on the end of your glasses! * ¡Una cámera grande atada a la barriga de una paloma! ¡Pílulas de cianuro escondidas en los anteojos!

The Spy Museum doesn't allow you to use cameras, though there are a couple of station where you can take a photo of yourself scattered among the exhibits. There is no rule against sketching, though! Scribbling down notes on stealthy weapons and recording devices really augmented the flavor of the exhibits. * El museo no permite fotographía, aunque hay algunos lugares donde puedes sacar un autoretrato entre las exhibiciones. ¡Pero no hay regla contra dibujar! Capturando con mis bosquejos información sobre armas secretas y grabadores de espionaje realmente aumentó el sabor de la exhibición.

DC: White House and Navy Memorial

The presidential inauguration is happening on Monday! I should get my last sketches from the trip to DC posted in time for that, huh? * ¡La inaguración presidential toma lugar este lunes! Debo compartir el resto de mis dibujos de mi visita a Washington, DC, ¿no?

Our first night in town was actually election night. Fast sketch the White House, all lit up while votes were being tallied around the nation. * La primera noche del viaje fue la noche de la elección. Este dibujo rápido de la Casa Blanca iluminada de noche captura el momento en que estaban contantdo las votas por toda la nación.

DC is a town full of memorials. One of the favorites we found on this trip was noteworthy for its simplicity--the Navy memorial features a lone dude with his bag, bundled up against the cold wind, waiting to depart on his ship. Tells a heck of a story with very little "pomp." * DC es una ciudad llena de momumentos comemorativos. El monumento del Navy era uno de nuestros favoritos. Hay un chavo solito, con mochila, abrigado contra el viento frío, esperando salir en su barco. Presenta un cuento muy emotivo sin mucha pompa.

 

Meeting Notes

A co-worker was trying to remember who had attended a certain meeting. * Una compañera de trabajo estaba tratando de recordar quienes assistieron a una reunión.

She ended up using my doodles on the paper that covers the meeting tables to figure it out. * Ella usó los dibujos que yo había hecho en el papel sobre la mesa para averiguarlo.

Baby Elephant

I am happy to report that the 16-day-old baby elephant at the Oregon Zoo is exactly as cute as you would expect. * Tengo placer en declarar que el elefante que se nació hace 16 dias en el Oregon Zoo es increíblemente precioso.

She runs around a lot but also trips over her own feet sometimes. * Ella corre con alegría, pero es muy joven y por supuesto se caye de vez en cuando.

And when she had explored for a little while, she runs back to tuck herself in the safe shelter of her massive mom. * Despues de explorar un poco, suele correr a la albergarse cerca de su mamá enorme.

The difference in shape between a full-grown adult (above) and a baby elephant (below) is very interesting! * ¡La diferencia del forma de un elefante adulto (arriba) y un elefante bebé (abajo) es muy interesante!

Pillars

Washington DC is a monumental city. I packed my black-paper sketchbook for last month's trip because I knew the dramatic marble would call out to be sketched. * Washington DC es una ciudad monumental. Llevé el libro de dibujar con el papel negro durante mi visita la mes pasada, porque supe que había un montón de edificios de mármol para dibujar.

 
Drawing all these giant pillars by daylight is certainly fun... *Claro que es divertido dibujar las columnas en la luz del día...

...but trying to capture the way they are illuminated after dark is an even more interesting challenge. * ...pero después de anochecer, con las luces prendidas en ángulos dramáticos--dibujando ésto es un reto aún más interesante.

Lincoln

Washington DC last month. We had to pay a visit to the Lincoln monument. (And it's beautiful at night.) * La mez pasada, durante nuestra visita a Washington DC, tuvimos que hacer la peregrinación al monumento de Lincoln. (Es tan bello por la noche.)

I started off drawing in white pencil on black paper. * Empecé dibujando con un lápiz blanco en papel negro.

Then I switched to watercolor.* Entonces cambié a acuarela.

There's a lot of warmth and color in a stark white marble statue, after all. * Hay mucho color y afecto en una estatua blanca de marmol, al fin y al cabo.

Sankofa Cafe

When we visited Washington DC last month, the place we were staying was near a little community bookstore and cafe called Sankofa. They make some of the best tofu breakfast sandwiches we've ever eaten. Wow. * Durante nuestra visita a Washington DC en noviembre, visitamos un café comunitario y tienda de libros llamado Sakofa. Hacen las tortas vegetarianas de tofu más ricos que he probado, y desayunamos ahí varias veces.

Our first visit, we watched the election returns on TV while eating breakfast. Our second visit, we took advantage of the sunny morning to eat on the patio, and I painted the big "justice" artwork on the porch. The real colors were much better than my watercolor sketch. * Durante la primera visita, miramos los resultados de la elección en el televisor. En la segunda visita, aprovechamos el sol y nos sentamos en el patio. Bosquejé una obra de arte sobre el tema de justicia--los colores originales son más bonitos que lo que capturé con mis aquarelas.

I also liked the fragments of mural on the wall next to the patio--a woman's face, and three tree trunks, hovering in the blankness of the bricks. A work in progress, or an old work fading away? (Or perhaps it's perfect how it is right now.) * También admiré los fragmentos de un mural cerca del patio. La cara de una mujer y tres arboles, supendios en los ladrillos vacios. No sé si faltan algunas detalles, o si es simplemente perfecto así....
